Baer was the first person to use a television screen to play a game, when he made his prototype in 1966, named "Brown Box". The first widely available video game console was the Magnavox Odyssey, which was released by Magnavox in 1972. However it wasn't until Atari was introduced in 1972 that things really took off. Atari wasn't immediately successful however, as they failed to make good quality games which led them to go bust after producing their own faulty hardware for their consoles. The earliest arcade games were simply remakes of popular existing coin-operated games. The avalanche of new arcade games that came out in the early 1980s are known as the first generation of video games. They weren't really that good, with most being pong clones or rip-offs of existing arcade games. The second generation saw the introduction of consoles produced by new companies rather than simply being imitations of existing arcade games. Companies such as Nintendo, Sega and numerous others used this new generation to promote their consoles, which had more complex hardware than the first generation machines. And so they were able to produce more complex and original console based video games, with many genres being born during this period. The third generation started out pretty much the same as the second, however by the fifth generation consoles became huge successes. With advances in hardware, better software and widespread use of home computers, many new genres were born. However this would be the first generation of consoles to split into two different types. The first type consisted of low cost machines aimed at the home market, while arcade machines were still popular in arcades and stand alone games consoles. But this gen saw many new genres being created which would change the way video games are viewed. From early on, there was a desire to take console based games into other formats such as computer play or mobile devices. eccc085e13
